Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between taekwondo and karate?
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that emphasizes the lower body by focusing on moves designed to keep opponents at a greater distance. While taekwondo does include many hand strikes, punches and other upper-body techniques, the style is best known for its wide variety of kicks.
How do I get started?
Just call us at 301-681-1200 or e-mail us to schedule your introduction which includes two private lessons with Grand master Thompson. During these sessions you'll learn the basics that will prepare you for group classes. At the end of the second lesson, you'll receive your uniform and white belt and can start taking beginner classes. (See our schedule for times.)
How often can I train?
We offer beginner classeswhite through orange beltsix days a week (every day except Friday). We encourage you to train as often as you can!
How long does it take to earn a black belt?
For students who are committed to their training, who train hard and train regularly, it typically takes two-and-a-half to three years to earn a black belt.
If I've trained in another martial art or at another taekwondo studio, do I have to start over as a white belt?
No. We recognize the rank you've achieved, no matter the style or school. You will remain at your current rank while you learn our style, then continue to progress when you're ready.
Will I be expected to compete in tournaments?
No. While we've had many students compete (and excel) in state and national tournaments, we don't emphasize or require tournament competition. We view the "sport" of taekwondo (what you see in the Olympics and other fighting competitions), as just one part of taekwondo training. We want our students to improve their bodies and minds by experiencing the full spectrum of taekwondo, including traditional and modern techniques, drills, "forms" practice (sequences of techniques that simulate combat), self defense, mental training and sparring.
